Fly with the "WINGS" of change !!!

Time again to throw some light on an activity where every individual's contribution is highly valued. An off topic post yet again, but could not have found a better place than my blog neutral

What is WINGS:
WINGS stands for opening up a whole new mindset among the differently-abled who feel resigned in life due to circumstances and society which limit them. It is about giving them a voice, enabling them to overcome their barriers in “Dreaming Big”. And it aims to achieve this through adventure sports.

How would WINGS help physically disabled?
This is a project initiated by a group of like-minded individuals. After our experience with adventure sports, we started thinking about how to reach out to youth with disabilities through this powerful medium. We first heard of such adventure activities being pursued by youth from National Association for Blind (NAB-Mysore).

Some of the past events:
A new High in their determination
The Himalayan battle against disability

Similar event in Bangalore:
BlindNews: Despite disability she soars to heights: student tries Aqua Parasailing

When does the event happen?
The event is scheduled in the weekend(1st or 2nd week of August,2007)

How can you contribute?
You can contribute in multiple ways:
  1. By being a volunteer.
  2. Getting us sponsors for the event.
  3. Spreading the message by linking this article in your blog or website.
  4. Or any miscellaneous way....
If you wish to discuss more in detail, kindly get in touch with Mahalakshmi Viswanathan(09886403269) or Ashwin Murali(09886742019) or Himanshu Sheth(09242471228).For more details, refer to this document.

Let us make this place, a better place to live by helping the cause of humanity!!

Microsoft - The (not so) innovative story...

This one is for all the guys who HATE Microsoft to the core wink There is an article - "Why I hate Microsoft", the complete story of (not so innovative) Microsoft !!!

From the pages that I have read so far in the (lengthy) story, I liked the following:

Gates: don't develop, copy

By the time PC-DOS took hold, Gates had already shown that Microsoft's future would hold very little innovation indeed. Gates' views on development are probably best illustrated by the following:

From: 'Programmers at work', Microsoft Press, Redmond, WA [c1986]:
Interviewer: "Is studying computer science the best way to prepare to be a programmer?"
Gates: "No, the best way to prepare is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and I fished out listings of their operating system."
Seldom have both Microsoft's lack of innovation and their kludgey, ad-hoc approach to software design been explained so concisely. It's also interesting to note that while many people have called Microsoft products copycat, trash or garbage, most of them probably had no idea how close to the truth they really were

Bangalore - Roof Top Film Festival

After season of unconferences, now comes the season of movies or should I say "Roof Top Movies"biggrin After the success of RTFF in Chennai, the filmi fever would be in Bangalore.

In very simple words,RTFF means "Underground Movies Outdoors" and more is described below:

Roof-Top film Fest (RTFF) is a film festival born out of the desire to provide a platform for people to enjoy movies and share their criticism in an open environment. An intense atmosphere will be created for the screening of the films and the discussions that follow. The Roof-Top Film Fest will focus on independent films, short films, cult movies and films that changed the way we looked at cinema.

"Roof Top Film Festivals" are typically where people get together on somebody's rooftop with a projector and a screen and watch movies which are not very popular in India or not released in multiplexes. These screenings are interspersed by independent film maker's movies and discussions on the movies screened.

The Bangalore chapter of RTFF is led by Hrish Thota and is scheduled for the month of July,2007.You can register for the RTFF here and do feel free to add the movies , you would like to watch in the movies section.See you all at the Bangalore RTFF...Did this sound,as if I am inviting you for the Oscars or the IIFA Film Festival...huh...wink

Dr CK Prahalad on 'Future India'

Just happened to speak to my friend Manish and guess what "He happened to meet Dr C K Prahalad, the author of the book "Fortune at the bottom of the Pyramid" and was he was lucky enough to ask him few questions".But the points that Dr Prahalad has stressed upon in this short conversation is excellent and definitely according India has a very bright future lol

The most interesting and motivating parts of the conversation are given below:

Availability of resources in India:
As per Dr Prahalad, these are types of resources in India
1. Misallocated resources
2. Trapped resources
3. Wasted resources

For effective utilization of resources , "we have to convert our asset to capital"

Strengths of India:
a. Remote Delivery:
The actual progress in India is not only IT but also Medical Transcription,Call Center. An excellent example : "Now it is very simple to make a Jyoti to speak English in an American Accent , all due to call centers in India biggrin

b. Global scale:
There are no of problems like water, power but we need to export it.There is excellent infrastructure to combat these problems and we need more companies like Reliance.

c. Emerging Competence Base:
Post-liberalization era has opened up the door for competition in the global market. We have opportunities in India also to utilize that same developed competency.

Manish's Q&A session with Dr. Prahlad:

Q. Your views about brain drain?
A. First of all, I do not like this word, brain drain. Let me remind you that Mahatma Gandhi was also NRI. When you are abroad, you can see the India form outside. You do not have to face day to day problem that you are facing here. You can see the phenomenal great strength of India.

Thanks Manish for sharing this wonderful piece of information with us.You can find the entire coverage of this interesting talk here

Birth of new age HITech India.....

Does anyone remember the scene of IT all over the world, when the was a burst in the DotCom bubble and to add to the worry there was Y2K(No IT person can forget the year 2000) which created many problems. Many jobs lost in the US and other IT major countries due to the DotCom burst and there was a major slump in the jobs in the IT field.During that time people looked upon India, just like a tall person looks down at a short person.

People in India who were dreaming of doing something big in the IT industry came under pressure and many companies(Remember one such company called SilverLine Software in Mumbai) shut down as a result of heavy loss as well as lack of projects.Companies started laying off people, this lay off was not only in the USA but in other countries since most of the projects come from the US.The IT scene was very bleak and everyone had lost faith in this industry. But there was Google who had a track record of not a single lay off even during the IT SlowDown.

I remember the days where India was not shown in the selection box of countries while we install Microsoft Windows. But hasnt India improved a lot??Slowly and steadily people started looking at other options other than US and than India was born..or to be more specific new age HiTech India was born. The IT slowdown came as a blessing in disguise for India.Companies started outsourcing work to India and other countries like Brazil,China etc to name a few.IT biggies like Samsung,Oralce,Accenture,Adobe,Microsoft(Do you know that apart from US , Microsoft has only one development centre ouside US and that's in Hyderabad) started coming to India and opened centres in various cities in India like Bangalore(The Garden City Of India),Hyderabad,Chennai,Noida etc.

One organization who is resonsible for getting all the work from other countries is NASSCOM(National Association Of Software and Services Comapnies) and since,we have started talking about NASSCOM,how can one forget the great Dewang Mehta(1962-2001) who was the President of NASSCOM till the year 2001.He was the President of NASSCOM during the rigid period of IT Slowdown and he told that his dream is that every person in India should have 4 basic neccessities (Now,see that we had 3 basic necessities in life, where has the forth come from)in life ie.ROTI(Food),KAPDA(Clothes),MAKAN(House) and Computer. This dream of Dewang Mehta is slowly taking shape and the time has come that India will be the first choice of IT companies for opening their centres as well as outsource work.

Throughout my article i used one word to great effect.Yes,you have guessed it right its OutSourcing. Some people fear when they use this word because once we use this word, than it means that we have received work that is not of good quality or the work is scrap.Sometimes the work may not be of good quality or it may be involving some sort of testing which they want it to be done by cheap labour. So where exactly do we get cheap labour? Most of the people say that India is the hub of cheap labour. If an Indian engineer goes onsite to the client's place , than the pay that he gets will be less as compared to what a person who has gone onsite from some other country. So since we do work for less amount, does that make labour cheap.Well, this word "Cheap" has a hidden meaning.Just charging a few dollars less, does not make labour cheap, but the point is that this is just the start of a new beginning(where we wont BEG but still we will GAIN).There are many Indians in Silicon Valley of US ,who have become enterpreneurs and have started their own companies and they are doing well.I remember Mr Gururaj Deshpande, CEO of Symacore Networks(and also Tejas Networks in Bangalore) and i am an ardent follower of his managerial skills. There is Mr Vinod Khosla, the co-founder of SUN(Stanford University Networks) MicroSystems and the Venture Capitalist(VC) of Silicon Valley's Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. These are just few of those Indians who made it big in the IT Sector and that too outside India. In the years to come, there will be more Indians who would become enterpreneurs in this field.

We say "Failure is a stepping Stone to success" or "Blessing comes in Disguise" and India has taken that blessing and has become one of the countries where IT has lots of contribution in the overall revenues of the country. So this is definitely the birth of a new India and this baby will nurture and become more mature in the years to come.

How do you become a Top Ad Executive

'What it takes to be a top ad exec'
[Economic Times]
[ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2005 12:48:23 AM]

Jagdip Bakshi,
CEO, Contract Advertising

Involvement is the key. If you are truly involved in the job, success will come to you. Erstwhile US President, John F Kennedy used this line in many of his speeches and that is, “I don’t mind if my son chooses drilling roads as his occupation, but he should be the best at that.”

John Goodman,
CEO, India and South Asia, Ogilvy & Mather

Get under the skin of your client’s business to a degree that it is clear you care about their success as much as they do. Be willing to take on new things and take some risks with your career — difficult assignments, strange places, and unfamiliar disciplines.

One of the smartest moves I ever made was going to the Czech Republic to run a start-up office right after their revolution in 1992. Everyone thought I was committing career suicide, but it gave me a very early taste of real entrepreneurship and running an agency by myself. And, start work early! I’ve usually cleared a lot of admin 1-2 hours before everyone else starts.

CVL Srinivas,
Managing Director, Maxus

Believe that there is no reward without risks. And, judgment and intuition are as important as analysis and research. Today’s world needs a multidimensional approach to problem solving. In this fast changing world, the rate of change “inside” must be greater than the rate of change “outside” in order to stay alive.

This is especially true in our media business. And lastly, convert problems into opportunities. As Richard Bach said, “There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for us in its hands. We seek problems because we enjoy their gifts.”

Meenakshi Madhvani,
Founder, Spatial Access

Hardwork, Honesty & Humility. Work each day as if it is the last day of your life. Be honest so that if tomorrow comes you can look it in the eye. Be humble and recognise the fact that you are but an instrument to serve a larger purpose. Have fun while doing it!

Jayshree Sundar,
Executive Director, Leo Burnett

Advertising is like joining the university of life. Observe life — the best ideas and insights come from there.

Preet Bedi,
President, Rediffusion DY&R

Assess and be fair to yourself. That makes you cope with both failure and success and doesn’t let you become either over-defensive or over-offensive.

Prem Mehta,
Chairman & Managing Director, Lintas

Commit yourself to a cause beyond self-interest and chase excellence in whatever you take up.

Wireless-Is the World ready for this age...

Starting from the olden days where we used to see the wires scattered everywhere. An age where we had telephones, but which we could not be taken from one place to another, but gone are the days where we require the wires. We can throw the wires in one dust bin. From the age when Grahem Bell invented the Telephone, technology has grown Leaps and Bounds and a day will come when there would be no wires left in the world and everything in this world would be called as "WIRELESS"(which has been the buzz word for this modern world.).

A few days back,i was watching TV and i saw the interview of Larry Page(Founder of Google) and he told about how the future of Google is in the field of Technology. Now,the amazing thing to be noted is that a search for a particular word on Google took a few milliseconds and the no of results extracted from the search was in lakhs. But this is what u do on your PC/Laptop.Now Google would provide solutions wirelessly for the search that you make. For eg. If you are a particular place A in a city B and you are searching for the nearest medical shop in that area, than the right solution is not searching around for that shop.Instead, just type the name of the area and the city in your mobile and send the request to the Google server and within a few seconds, the result will be in your cell phone.Amazing is'nt it....

A big revolution came in the world of computers with the advent of USB devices.(Computer itself is revolutionary). Now for those of you who have no idea about USB,let me tell you that USB(Universal Serial Bus) is a Plug and Play Device which you just attach on the USB port of your PC.Imagine the USB going wireless. Now with the wireless USB, you can transfer the data from the PC to the USB stick and vice versa.

Few days back,I was just wondering if we have the voice recognition facility where in if we want to find where is place "ABC",we just say "ABC" and it will fetch the results from its server and will give us the results on the phone. This takes just a few seconds and within no time , you have the results in the cell phone.

Now after few years, not only will there be PC in each and every house in India, but in some places , your house would be controlled by PC and there wont be any requirement for keys!!!!That sounds really good...Isnt it...

I am waiting for technology to take over and this will happen within no time....
