Gogola : Because it's not Google

Last week, I was holidaying in my home place - Mumbai and we went out shopping for my marriage which is due on 23rd November, 2009. We were shopping at Bandra which is considered as a very posh place & there we can across a small chat [चाट] outlet. With the scare of swine flu, customers normally avoid from going to such places and this is where it becomes important for the shop owners to win back the customers confidence.

But what if, we use a household name to brand our small product. This is what MIGHT make the customer to purchase & use the product. And the chat outlet did exactly the same. The brand which was used was none other than Google and the product - Gola [गोला] was named Gogola, some interesting pictures below:

Considering that Internet explorer is the most widely used browser in India, using it effectively would be considered as "Another feather in their cap". Just like the glass, the menu card was also shown in a very geeky manner in an IE window [picture below]:

I had a chat with the shop owner and he told that "They came out with this strategy mainly to get customer's confidence" and as Google & Microsoft are household names[no matter you use them or not, but you definitely know them] using them ignites a spark in the customer's mind. This trust indirectly builds the Gogola brand.

This is a lesson from a small time shop owner on "How a product can become a brand, sometimes by smartly re-modeling an existing brand".

Why should you work for a startup

As an Engineer, all of us wanted to work in companies like Infosys, Wipro, Satyam Mahindra Satyam & many other so called Indian MNCs. However, times seem to have changed now due to accessibility to lot of resources available on the internet & some credit also goes to the change in our mindset. Startups have really become a buzz word & guys don't feel shy that they are now working in a startup !!! In fact, many of them even prefer working in startups than working in MNCs.

As per the recent update in my LinkedIn profile, last 2 years provided me with the best learning(s) in my professional career and it was entirely in startups. In fact, I was thinking of an appropriate title for this article and one which struck me was "Why should you AT LEAST ONCE work in a startup". Each one of us have a reason to do or not to do a thing, so if you are interested to work in startup than the following reasons may help you to decide "Whether you should or should not" ....

Entrepreneurial litmus test
If you aspire to be an entrepreneur, it is very important to work in an early stage startup or should we say "To pass the litmus test". There are MORE ups & downs in a startup which not only teach you to deal with difficulties but also help you understand yourself better. As for me, startups have taught me to survive on less money & also to understand "Whether I can myself startup sometime?". Working in a startup becomes the very first step to look within yourself & say "Can I do it?"...

Relationships Matter
In a startup, it becomes difficult to isolate from the startup community which in turn teaches the Art of Networking. This not only helps to build the startup's brand through WOM but also to network with fellow startup guys. Not to forget relationships inside the office; it is very important to keep best of the relations with every person inside the startup as well since, you cannot stay isolated neither inside nor outside your startup. It is a small world and you never know when you would again work with your colleague smile

Learn to save[for present & future]
There is a famous one liner "It's all about the money honey". Every person in a startup always hopes for the best but is prepared for the worst. In other words, once you enter the startup arena, the first to do IMHO is to become a bit stingy and keep check on your finances. Hence,a startup would also turn out to be a finance institution !!!

Contribution
If you are a person who is interested in multiple things [being an expert in one], your startup may become "fuel to your interest/passion". Since the barriers are low in a small company, it becomes easy to contribute in multiple areas & prove your passion eg. Engineer with an inclination to marketing can help market the service/product which might be impossible to do in an established company.

ONLY results matter
Big corporations focus on the process along with the results however, startups look out only for results. Hence, if you are a fresher looking out for some interesting work, startup would give you the push-up and later on MNC would give the necessary branding. Startups are less hierarchical and more result focused.

Bootstrapping
As mentioned before, startups help to bring out your other qualities some of which you might have never exploited !!! This helps you master the Art of Bootstrapping. This would become an important step not only when you startup but also when you are in a crisis situation[like the current tumbling economy].May be sometimes, it becomes necessary to be "Jack of ALL trades than be a master of NONE"

If you have some more reasons to share, please leave them in the comments and it would be added to the article.

Is BMTC missing an opportunity ?

There is a saying "Nothing in this world is constant except change", on a similar lines there have been lot of changes in Bangalore; some good, some bad. However, one thing that has drastically changed is the "Public Transportation". Remember the days when we only had blue colored BMTC buses but now with the introduction of Volvo buses, Public Transportation has gained momentum. Not to forget with the shift of the international airport to a so called remote place, the obvious choice of most of the Bangaloreans is the famous Vajra bus.

BMTC has done a great job by introducing Volvo buses for the right places and also setting the up the right frequency for the right routes e.g ITPL or Electronics City is a place which is filled with software companies and the frequency of Volvo buses is exceptionally great there !!!

Before writing this article, I interacted with a few people[who travel to ITPL] and most of them preferred BMTC over their own cars/bikes. Apart from the normal ways of generating revenue, there are many other areas where BMTC can look for more revenue:

Brand Promotion
Most of the times, there is FM being played on the radio in the bus but if BMTC manages to tie up with brands, radio can act as a great medium for marketing. It can be used to showcase offers in shopping malls, promote new brands, movies etc. Remember, there is Big Bazaar near ITPL; so this would be much useful in such cases !!!

Job Announcements
After the economy tumbled, many were laid off where some of them landed up in jobs out of no better choice. With Indian economy showing early signs of recovery, Volvo bus would make an excellent tool to showcase jobs again through radio or advertisements inside the bus. To make things better, these advertisements can be geo-targetted like buses from ITPL, Electronics City etc. would ONLY carry those ads.

OOH Advertising
Along with the convenience, the added advantage in Volvo is the additional standing space. The photograph shows the frontal view & there is definitely a big opportunity for Out Of Home advertising. There is space for 2 TVs [one in the frontal entry and other at the back entry]. With OOH growing at 20% annually , this is a big opportunity form BMTC to target the people travelling in the bus.

To summarize, BMTC can replicate the Google Adsense model for the Volvo - RIGHT Ads Targeted for the RIGHT routes and obviously for the RIGHT customers !!!

Many of us would be travelling by BMTC buses, hence if you feel there is any other revenue generating opportunity BMTC is missing; please leave them in the comments section & it would be added to the
article.

[LinkedIn] The Twitter Success Story

The question which was posted on LinkedIn about Twitter - Success story through Twitter has received excellent response from guys from different geographical locations.

A gist of some interesting answers below -

Story - 1
Just to share an experience on Customer Service and Listening. I have been on twitter for 6-8 months now, I just shouted out about @cleartrip not giving out any offers on twitter. cleartrip listened to my shout out and rolled out the offer in twitter. Now that's definitely gotta make a customer feel good.
Twitter is more about engaging with your customers, to know what they want and more importantly act on it.
Then there are companies in the b2b business finding leads through twitter. So its happening, but companies are more or less just absorbing the stuff which can be done on twitter.
-Rahul Nambiar,Interactive Solutions Architect

Story - 2
Kogi bbq, a korean taco truck in Los Angeles has attributed much of its rapid and recent growth to twitter. http://twitter.com/kogibbq as has Coffee Groundz, a cafe in Houston http://twitter.com/CoffeeGroundz.
-Gary Sanchez, Consumer Marketing Leader

JustDial - Where it went WRONG ...

Few weeks back when I started blogging, there was mention about my old online lifeline - JustDial. Most of us who are online more than half the time always rely on mediums like Wikipedia, Google Maps, JustDial etc for information. The advantage is you have ready-made information which comes free of cost & MOST of the times it is proven and might be CORRECT.

Let me start off with a terrible incident with JustDial which made a repeat customer like me to walk away from the service !!!

Before the delivery
The episode started when I called up JustDial for Packers & Movers [M&P] in Hyderabad. As soon as I hung-up the call, there was a series of calls from different small to big M&P. I got a good deal with a P&M named DG P&M, Hyderabad. Though it is a small M&P, they gave a great deal as well as promised an on-time delivery[i.e within two working days the luggage would reach Bangalore]. After I reached Bangalore, there was no trace of the luggage for more than 4 days. I spoke to close to around 4-5 guys from DG P&M & 2-3 drivers who told me that the luggage is very close to my place and it would reach in few hours. This continued for more than 5 days and finally I received the luggage[though it was not in the state in which I gave to them].

After the delivery
Once my fearful moments were over, I immediately called up JustDial and there were number of lessons learnt about JustDial[and in general the mis-information floating on the internet]

Authenticity of information
When I asked the customer care executive about the authenticity of their huge database, she had no clue about the same.In fact, even as an anonymous user, I was able to change the mobile number of the DG P&M which was a complete security breach in JustDial !!! JustDial has an interesting Terms Of Use with a special mention to it's authentication - While every attempt has been made to ascertain the authenticity of the site content ...

Customer is NOT the king
JustDial would be definitely serving lot's of people daily[considering it is a Rs 500 cr enterprise] so it would not bother about every single customer but what if the customer has called back with a grievance.Even on my narration of the complete incident, the executive completely denied to transfer the call to the right person. In fact, she told me to read the Terms of JustDial & further added that they cannot remove any company listed in their database [even if the customer says that they had a horrible experience after using their service].

Why care about Media/Social Media
After I got a bad response from one executive, I called back again after some time. After completing my narration, I informed the executive that I have decided to share this message on TV through CNBC Pahredar , she was least bothered & argued with me for a long time. Not to mention that social media tools like blogs, Facebook were not new to her but she never cared how much it would affect JustDial's online reputation.

Is Internet just for FUN ?
Like me , many people rely heavily on the information available on the internet but this incident made me wonder - Can we trust this information [even if it comes through a reputed service like JustDial]. Or should we say- Information can be used as long as there is no serious motive attached with it [ i.e we can use it to find Theaters, Pizza corners but not if you are looking out for something which may turn your life upside-down....

If you have any such mis-incident to share, please leave them in the comments section and it would be added to the main article.

EVANGELIZE yourSELF ...

It has been almost a month since the last update on this blog. Past few weeks have been pretty bad where I had an incident which made me realize "How search agents like JustDial can lead to mis[information] instead of providing information"...More on that in a separate blog article.

Just came across an interesting audio presentation which touches on The art of evangelizing oneself , hope you find it useful too ...

Get more productive with "Prism"

Few months back, I had blogged about GMDesk - the Adobe AIR app that makes access to all your favorite Google services easy. However, the issue with the app was that it worked fine on Windows but on Linux, the app crashes when you type M/m in user-id/password text box !!!

Mozilla Labs came out with an interesting add-on called Prism which like GMDesk allows you to access your favorite sites as a standalone app.Yesterday, I gave a try to Prism and really loved it - some of the reasons listed below:
  • Firefox on my PC has lot of add-ons and few like TwitterFox make it really very slow since they have to poll for new messages every xyz minutes.
  • For users of Chrome, this would be one of the potential reasons to switch to Firefox since Prism does not share the memory with Firefox and hence Prism app continues to run even though your browser crashes/hangs.
  • Last but not the least, Prism enhances your productivity since you don't have to switch tabs or open multiple windows to get to your favorite sites since, the desktop shortcuts to your Prism apps would do the trick smile
Though Prism apps take up lot of memory [snapshot below] yet they really make browsing fun as well as interesting.

Important Links :

Do give Prism a try & definitely it would be a big productivity booster for you like it has been for me !!!

The Barber story : How to win & multiply customers

Next day being the auspicious occasion of Diwali,I decided to get a different look wink and the time spent at the saloon shaped up in an excellent learning experience.

The barbers at the shop showed great professionalism[both in terms of work and customer delight] which can be easily co-related to our day to day activities.

Below are the 6 simple learnings from that experience:

1. Always be watchful for customers
I went to the saloon in the afternoon & due to heavy rush there, I returned back home. When I again went in the evening, that same barber recognized me & asked me the reason to do the same i.e whether there was a problem or I was not satisfied with their service during the previous visit or any other reason.
It is very important to take feedback from the customer since, in today's time, customer always has more choices than you can ever think of !!!

2. How to break the communication barrier
As I don't belong to Bangalore, some times it becomes difficult to communicate[especially if the other person does not know Hindi or English].Hence,if I don't hand over the exact requirements, I cannot expect a proper output from that person.Same was the case in the saloon where language became a communication barrier sad.But soon, I remembered about my passport size photo in my wallet and that photo became a single line requirement for the barber.
It is of utmost importance to find alternate as well as smart ways to break the communication barrier else it would have a negative effect on the deliverables.

3. Benchmarking always helps
As mentioned in the previous point,my photograph became a benchmark for the barber and benchmarking always speeds up things.
Always check out if there is a benchmark in what you are doing & that would speed up your entire process of development.

4. Team-work is the mantra
At one point, the barber who was making my shave got confused & could not proceed.Immediately, the other barber came to his rescue[though he was not called for any help] & took over the baton from him.
In a team,it becomes very important to gain as well as share knowledge as at the end of the day, one person failing in a team would lead to the entire team's failure !!!

5. How to kill the Distraction
As you are aware that all saloons at least have a TV & many times, it becomes a source of distraction rather than entertainment.Same was the case with the barber, who concentrated equally watching the TV along with the hair-cut.His co-worker switched off the TV[after a while] when his slow output was creating an irritation to customers.
Every person has at least one source of distraction but when the individual distraction results in a negative effect on the other co-workers, it is time to take strict action !!! As a team, your intent should be to deliver the best and convert your first time customers to repeat customers to loyal customers to customer evangelists [as stated below].

6. How to create Customer Evangelists
As I was paying the barber,I appreciated him for his work and he reciprocated for the same. The other guy[who had got confused as mentioned in point(4)] did not only thank me but also promised me to deliver his best next time [that too without requiring the photo biggrin]
Simple words of gratitude helps develop as well as maintain a good relationship with the customer.Though the barber could not deliver, his promise [to deliver next time] makes me recommend his shop to others and this way his/your loyal customers would become your evangelists !!!

Co-founder or Employee ?

We know about the saying : "Grass is green on the other side" but we cannot not always think Green...When there is a small team , there are bound to be some differences but these small differences should make the atmosphere better and bring out the best results out of us smile

However as I mentioned in one of my previous article , many times it is very important to figure out the BAD INTENTIONS, else it would become so late that you can neither continue nor leave the startup!!! And even if you continue, there is every possibility that "You would not get the ROI for your efforts "[What if you are compelled to leave prior to the completion of your vesting period because there are 101 reasons that can be made up for you to leave...]Came across a very interesting question[or should I call a real life scenario] , which was posted on StartupNation titled "I think I'm a co-founder" -

A few years back a friend told me about an idea for a website he had. He said he thought he could make some money from it, but he needed someone to help him and he asked me if I knew anyone who would be interested. I suggested myself, he agreed, and things got started

His plan never worked out, but I continued to blog, at one point so much that I was rarely leaving my house. At one point, he became so disheartened with how things were going that he told me he was considering selling the website. He told me that for my work he'd give me half of what he could sell it for, which he figured would be a pretty large sum. I told him not to, because if we could make it work then it would really be profitable.

The site has slowly grown into a small but fairly successful website. I'm still "holding up that truck", but I'm arguably a little less important now.

Since then he's been getting a lot of media attention and meeting a lot of people who have been very successful at doing the same thing. But now he's calling himself the founder of the website. He refuses to acknowledge that I did anything more than help him as a friend, and that now I'm nothing more than his employee.

Well, before such an unavoidable situation is encountered, check out the eye-openers here, here, here & here

Mental Lock - The ASLAN phenomenon

This weekend, I picked up an interesting book titled "The Smart Crow Never Goes Thirsty" by Moid Siddiqui. It is a very short book which stresses on some of the finer points of creativity [starting from the initial period of Childhood , where parents have the maximum chance to unlock their child's locked potential].

One of the interesting lines in the book is "Ask your child not only to think WISE but also think OTHERWISE biggrin" The book than talks about the corporate culture, the changes that can be made and the effects of those changes.... In few words, it is a book which talks about "INNOVATIVE Culture Building". One of the interesting topic's in the book is "The Mental Lock" and for most of us,the reason is closely related to The Aslan Phenomenon.

Below are some of the excerpts from the book :

The Aslan Phenomenon:
If we don't challenge the existing practice, there is every likelihood of two potential dangers. The first is that you get locked in one approach, method or strategy without noticing the other approaches that might be more appropriate. As a result, you may tailor your problems to the preconceptions you hold and which enable you to solve them in your own way.The fact that rules should be challenged is called the Aslan Phenomenon ,which runs as follows:
  • We make rules based on the reasons that make a lot of sense.
  • We follow the rules religiously.
  • Time passes and times change.
  • The original reasons for the generation of these rules may no longer exist , but because the rules are still in practice, we continue to follow them rolleyes
A person liked to jog every morning. He had many different routes he could take but he invariably took the longest route as his friend used to stay in the neighbourhood where he used to stop and gossip. His name was Aslan. So, stopping at Aslan's house became a rule for having some fun.One day, Aslan moved out of the neighbourhood but the man continued taking the same long route to stop at the same place even though Aslan no longer lived there.

This is what happens to most of us and since that time, the name Aslan became a phenomenon.

QWERTYUIOP:
As many say : The best ideas strike ,when you think the weirdest kind of things smile

The QWERTYUIOP configuration of the keyboard is just one of the examples that aroused because of the so called Ani-Aslan thinking. In 1870's , Sholes & Company, a leading manufacturer of typewriters received many complaints from users about typewriter keys sticking together if the operator keyed too fast. The solution was to slow down the typists.

The result was an inefficient keyboard configuration and the most commonly used letters 'A', 'I' and 'O' were positioned in such a way that the relatively weaker fingers were used to depress them.Since then, the QWERTY logic has been used in all the keyboards !!!

The bottom-line is :
Many organizational practices are a result of the Aslan Principle. There are many business practices that are obsolete or dead or being followed for many years.Once a rule is used in practice, it is very difficult to be eliminated even though the original reason for its coming into force has disappeared.Creative thinking involves not only generating new ideas, but escaping from the obsolete ones as well.

Updates on ThoughtsPrevail ...

While we are on any blog, it is always difficult to search for a particular article without opening the blog.I also faced a similar problem a few days back, when I was searching for an article on my blog, so either I used to Google it or search on my blog.I am sure that all of us face this issue with many blogs and hence, there are three things which can at least make your blog search/reading efficient and easy smile These are some small yet useful updates for this blog...

1. Firefox Search Plugin :
Firefox search plugin always comes in very handy when you are searching on some of your favourite websites like Google, LinkedIn, Yahoo etc. Just as it is cool & faster to use it for websites, it would be even better to use it for your favourite blogs !!!

You can find the code of ThoughtsPrevail's Firefox Plugin here.Below is a small snapshot of the source code

ThoughtsPrevail Search pluginIf you have to use this code for your blog or any of your favourite blogs , just change the code in the box with the "Search Format" used by the Search Engine used on that blog. You can use 16*16 Icon for your Blog as well.A small snapshot for the search in action with Firefox

How to use:
  • Download ThoughtsPrevail.xml from here.Copy it into "..\..\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins\" folder [in case of Windows] and into "/home/user-name/.mozilla/firefox/q11f7htt.default/searchplugins/" [in case of UBuntu]
  • Restart Firefox and you are done.
2. Thoughtsprevail Toolbar :
Techcrunch toolbar has been quite helpful and it was a nice experience to use the same.Hence, I have used the same FREE service named Conduit to create the ThoughtsPrevail toolbar.Below is a snapshot of the toolbar:

3. ThoughtsPrevail Mobile Version :
Though it is too late to create a mobile version of the blog [after 3.5 years of blogging] , but finally ThoughtsPrevail has a mobile version wink You can check out ThoughtsPrevail mobile version here. There are other websites like Mofuse and you can check out it's mobile version here and the I-Phone version here. Some interesting techniques to make your blog mobile can be found here

GreaseMetal : GreaseMonkey for Chrome

Last few days, I have been trying lot of things with the Chrome especially Blogging. For me, Firefox changes the entire blogging experience with it's two addons - Web Developer Toolbar and Greasemonkey. Though Scribefire and other offline blogging tools namely Live Writer make life simpler but nothing matches the experience of blogging like the good old Firefox biggrin

As you might see , Smileys add a lot of visual effect to any article and hence, Greasemonkey was a must addon for Chrome !!! A Japanese company named Cybozu Labs has come up with version of Greasemonkey for Chome called Greasemetal. Though, still in it's initial phase, Greasemetal still solves the purpose and since, I had some initial problems while setting up; hence thought it would be nice to list the steps here:
  1. Download Greasemetal from here and install it in your system.
  2. Once installed , copy the required Javascript file which you want to use for e.g Emoctions for Blogger in my case to ..\..\Program Files\Greasemetal\userjs [i.e. Javascript folder of GreaseMetal].Make the required changes to your Blogger template as mentioned here
  3. Close Chrome and start Greasemetal [it is not loaded automatically like Greasemonkey] from the Start Menu and you would see a confirmation screen as shown below:
  4. Open your Blogger account and your Blogger Smileys are on their way !!!
You can also find an alternate solution to setting up Greasemetal here .Hope you have a nice Blogging experience with Chrome [& in the meanwhile let's wait for some more Chrome addons smile]

LinkedIn : How do I get my Business Site reviewed ?

Last few days have been quite hectic for me and I almost vanished from the Blogosphere sad but I am back again with what I love to do i.e. Blogging !!! To get back on track, I felt to share an interesting question which was asked on LinkedIn and thanks to Ramjee Ganti for suggesting me as an expert in the BLOGGING category smile

If you are a Blogger or someone who wants to get your website/blog reviewed, than either you should keep a track on the replies to question or attempt to answer the question given below:

Note:
Below is the question and my attempted answer on LinkedIn.

How do I get my business web site reviewed? How do I get bloggers to blog about my site?
  1. Know about the your Business as well as the business in which the Blogger is associated with e.g If your business is into Semiconductors, than only consult a blogger who is into that space.A blogger who writes on Web 2.0 would not be a value addition to your marketing strategy but instead may take up your example as a negative one sad and write on his/her own blog.
  2. Search for Bloggers on relevant sites like LinkedIn, Ning, Technorati, Digg etc. and send each one a proper and personalized pitch referring from where you came across their profile , why should they write about your business etc. etc. Remember, it is very important to give a personalized touch !!!
  3. Don't try to bribe the blogger saying you would get gift A/B/C if you write for them. This would result in a negative publicity in most of the cases. Microsoft is very famous for this one.
  4. Finally, if you want Bloggers to write about you, than they also want a small mention that "They have written for you" hence, add all the links and email each one personally so that you can expect BETTER words from them in future !!!
  5. Last but not the least, remember that if you need a Blogger's help now, you may also need the same in Future, so Try to maintain touch with the Blogger with whom you want to wink
Note:
There would be a plenty of resources available on the Internet but at the end of the day, it depends on execution.

Characteristics of SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS

In continuation to my previous article , today we would look into another interesting topic from my current read What Self-Made Millionaires really think, know and do. Due to my association with an early stage startup, the current article on "Successful Entrepreneurial Qualities" looked very much relevant.

Well, I should agree that I could really feel the things during the process of writing this article smile Though, Qualities and Execution may sometimes seem disjoint , it is only when they get married; a successful business is made !!!!

A sense of mission :
Successful entrepreneurs set out to improve the lives of their customers. They do not simply set out to make a big pile of money. They are workaholic and love working hard at something that they love doing.

Self-Belief :
They believe that they will be successful. They expect to be successful.Even when bankrupt, they still believe that one day they will be successful.

Acceptance of responsibility :
Successful entrepreneurs are found to accept responsibility for themselves and not to blame others.

Resolution to pay the price :
Entrepreneurs understand the price that must be paid to achieve their goals, and they resolve to pay the necessary price.

Commitment to success :
Successful entrepreneurs have a 100 percent commitment to becoming successful. They focus and concentrate on their area of excellence.

Judgement :
They are not necessarily clever with words, arithmetic or mechanics. However, they have developed social skills, intelligence and judgement.

The helicopter view :
Entrepreneurs can see the big picture, acticipate trends. They have foresight in that they always look to the future, understanding that the rest of our business lives will be spent in the future.

Leadership skills :
They set goals, have high expectations of themselves & others and listen carefully. They have the ability to draw extraordinary performance from ordinary people.

Excellence in selling :
Entrepreneurs generally are excellent at selling. They focus on benefits to the customer, satisfying customer desires and relieving customer fears. They make excellent presentations and show the product or service in its best light.

Managing time effectively :
They develop the ability to focus on the 20 percent that brings in the 80 percent of success, and delegate the 80 percent to others.

Excellent communications :
Successful entrepreneurs tend to be excellent in private discussions, conducting meetings, giving presentations and submitting reports.

Persistence :
Successful entrepreneurs persist. They understand that it takes time to make it really BIG !!! They are prepared to go the extra mile and do that little bit extra for which they do not get paid.
